Ludvig Åberg Returns to Competitive Golf After Knee Surgery

Ludvig Åberg is back on the professional golf scene, marking his return with participation in this year’s RSM Classic. This is his first competitive outing since the Tour Championship, following a significant hiatus due to knee surgery. As he steps onto the green, Åberg not only resumes his journey on the PGA Tour but hopes to continue the momentum he had built prior to his enforced break.

A Struggle with Pain

Åberg’s knee issues began around April or May of last year, as he reflected, “I felt early in the year this must have been somewhere around April, May, something like that it started to act up a little bit.” Initial checks didn’t significantly impact his performance; however, ongoing consultation with medical experts led him to the inevitable conclusion that surgery was necessary. Discussing his decision, Åberg shared, “We got it checked out and then I still felt fine, so it didn't hinder me in terms of my training or my play. So then, after consulting with a few doctors, I knew that I needed to have surgery at some point.”

Facing the Challenge

The Swedish golfer’s journey through this period was marked by caution, as he withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship for precautionary reasons and competed with a knee brace during the PGA Championship. Åberg particularly shone at the U.S. Open and Scottish Open, leading after 36 and 54 holes respectively, demonstrating he was still a fierce competitor despite his condition. The intensity peaked at the BMW Championship, where Åberg impressively finished as the runner-up to Keegan Bradley.

The Road to Recovery

Following the playoff season, Åberg decided it was time to address his knee problem definitively. The procedure - arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus - required a well-planned recovery phase. He took a deliberate four-week break from golf for rehabilitation and to regain his strength, reflecting philosophically on this enforced hiatus. “I had about four weeks off from playing golf; I didn't touch a golf club,” Åberg recalled. “Started hitting short pitches and wedges at first and then to kind of load it a little bit more and put more pressure on it.”

This break was his first from professional golf since his senior year in college. Åberg admitted, “It's been nice to have a little break. It was probably the first break that I've had from golf since my senior year in college, so it was quite nice to kind of reflect a little bit, sit down and not having to go play a tournament at some point.”

Back in the Swing

With recovery milestones achieved, Åberg returns with optimism and readiness for the competition at the RSM Classic. He reassures fans and the golfing world of his well-being, stating, “I feel 100%, otherwise I wouldn't be here.” His return to St. Simons Island holds particular significance as it was the venue where he tied the all-time scoring record at the RSM Classic with a remarkable 29 under par last season.

While his participation in this tournament does not alter his PGA Tour status, it does mark an important personal milestone in maintaining his rhythm and preparing for the forthcoming 2024 schedule. The comeback is carefully crafted, reinstating him in the circuit while paying close attention to his fitness and form.

As the golfing calendar presses on, Åberg’s return adds excitement and a narrative of resilience to the tour. His journey from grappling with injury to staging a formidable comeback is a testament to his dedication and skill as a golfer. With the determination shown thus far, Åberg remains a figure to watch closely as he navigates the season ahead.
