Mekhi Becton Joins Philadelphia Eagles Amid Injuries, Impresses Early

The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton, a move driven by necessity and opportunity. Initially brought in to serve as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton’s role quickly evolved due to an unexpected injury.

Tyler Steen, who was slated to be the starting right guard, suffered an ankle injury, creating an immediate opening in the lineup. Becton, known for his versatility, was thrust into action. During his first practice with the first team, Becton lined up as the right guard and impressively neutralized Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. It was an auspicious start for the talented lineman.

Eagles' coach Nick Sirianni expressed optimism about Becton's performance, saying, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."

The beginning of training camp, however, saw Becton sidelined. He did not participate in the initial sessions, using that time strategically to stay engaged and learn from his teammates. This period was essential for him to understand the playbook and bond with the team's dynamics.

"The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton shared candidly.

Now active in practice, Becton has responded well to the challenges of shuffling between positions. Eagles’ left guard, Landon Dickerson, appreciates Becton's flexibility and contribution amid the team's injury woes. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" said Dickerson.

Becton's ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line adds significant value to the team. As Dickerson noted, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."

Despite the disruptions and adjustments, Becton maintains a readiness to contribute, regardless of how his role might fluctuate. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton assured.

The Eagles have not yet disclosed the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, but Becton's presence offers a layer of security and performance. His engagement during training camp and adaptability in practices signal promising depth for the Eagles' offensive line.

As the team navigates through injuries and adjusts its lineup, Becton appears to be a valuable asset capable of stepping up when needed. His first few practices have shown that he can handle high-pressure situations, a crucial attribute for any player aspiring to make a lasting impact in the NFL.

Becton, who remains a critical component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, is already making the most of his opportunity. Continuously learning and demonstrating his ability to adapt, he is poised to be a key figure in the Eagles’ offensive strategies this season.
