Kawhi Leonard Faces Uncertain Future Amid Persistent Knee Issues
Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard's offseason has been anything but relaxing as he battles persistent inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. The issue has been a thorn in Leonard’s side, forcing him to miss crucial games and disrupting the Clippers' playoff hopes last season.
Managing Inflammation and Recovery
The Clippers have implemented a range of treatments since last season to address Leonard's knee issues. The team’s President of Basketball Operations, Lawrence Frank, has been candid about the challenges and the strategies employed to get Leonard back to full fitness. “I think the encouraging thing is we've seen progress. This was a real tricky thing in terms of the inflammation. We're kind of searching for answers along the way, and with time we continue to learn more about what works, what hasn't,” Frank said. “It's truly unfortunate that he's had to deal with this, but I think we're definitely trending in the right direction.”
Leonard’s knee problems became particularly apparent during the first round of the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks. The inflammation limited him to just two games, and the Clippers were ultimately eliminated from the series. Frank elaborated on the delicate balance the team must maintain: “We're just really going to focus on strengthening and loading. I think we learned some lessons. Just if you think about it, he desperately wanted to come back and play in that Dallas series, and within a game and a half, the inflammation came where it wasn't manageable, so we don't want to put ourselves in that position.”
Precautionary Measures in Training Camp
With the upcoming training camp, the Clippers have decided to play it safe, holding Leonard out of drills to prevent any recurrence of inflammation. This cautious approach underscores the team’s commitment to ensuring Leonard’s long-term health. “We got the knee in a really, really good place. [He came] back for Dallas [in the playoffs] and it has been manageable since. But we really, really spent the offseason trying to get this 100% and I think we're getting closer and closer,” Frank revealed.
Despite the knee troubles, Leonard participated in training camp with USA Basketball. However, the national team ultimately decided to replace him with Derrick White to give Leonard the opportunity to focus solely on his rehabilitation with the Clippers. This move further illustrates how critical Leonard's recovery is to both his team and his career.
No Timeline for Return
As of now, there remains no confirmed timeline for Leonard’s return to regular-season action. The uncertainty revolves around how his knee responds to each phase of his rehabilitation. Frank was transparent about the unpredictability of the situation: “I think that the timing's all going to basically depend on how his knee responds to each phase. No one has a crystal ball.”
The Clippers and their fans are undoubtedly eager to see Leonard back on the court, but the primary focus remains on his health and ensuring he can play without ongoing pain and risk of further injury. As the NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on Leonard’s progress, with hopes that the team’s careful and methodical approach will pay off, allowing their star player to shine once more.
